    supported by the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz as part of the Academies Program Co operation partner of the MRI is the Institute for Musicology and Music Computer Sciences at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe The RWA is divided into three parts devoted to the following areas of Max Reger s output Organ works 7 volumes Songs and choral works 10 volumes Arrangements of works by other composers 11 volumes Editorial directors of the RWA are Prof Dr Susanne Popp and Prof Dr Thomas Seedorf editors of the individual volumes Dr Alexander Becker Dr Christopher Grafschmidt Dr Stefan König and Dr Stefanie Steiner Grage The RWA as a hybrid edition combines volumes of printed music with digital excerpts All of the sources manuscripts first prints letters as well as illustrating documents are made available on DVD scientifically processed by Edirom software Their reproduction annotation and comparison offer all users who want to understand the work from its beginnings or to delve deeper into the compositional working process numerous insights into Reger s working processes and into the works themselves The encyclopedic portion of the DVD enriches and illuminates the examination of the sources and offers further information and

    Wie schön leucht t uns der Morgenstern op 40 No 1 as a program music work Volume I 2 3 Fantasias and fugues variations sonatas suites Variations and Fugue in F sharp minor op 73 Engraver s copy fol 6 recto Signatur Mus Ms 017 In his organ works in the grand style not based on chorales Reger intended to fully exhaust the innovative possibilities of the modern concert organ as well as the player The multi layered orientation towards the works of his great model Johann Sebastian Bach is notably present of course mainly in Fantasia and Fugue on B A C H op 46 but also in Suite in E minor op 16 that was already dedicated o the spirit of Joh Seb Bach By this means Reger reanimated the genre of organ music that was regarded as a relic of bygone times without decoupling it from its baroque tradition A considerable issue in both volumes is the influence of Karl Straube on the form of Regers works In the I Sonata in Fis minor op 33 he leads onto a re scoring of a whole verse its original version is to be found on the DVD as PDF document in Introduction Passacaglia and Fugue in E minor op 127 probably the majority of the performance instructions is to be traced back to Straube and in Fantasia and Fugue in D minor op 135b surely the one or other cancellation may be a result of conversations between Reger and his friend in this special case in Volume I 3 the authorized shortened version is to be found beside a reconstruction of the discarded long version that is also present in concert programmes Volume I 4 Chorale Preludes Fifty two Easy Chorale Preludes op 67 Nr 16 Engraver s copy fol 15 recto Signatur Mus Ms 014 With his chorale preludes Max Reger almost uniquely amongst composers around the turn of the century has set artistic standards for the music for liturgical practice This genre accompanied him throughout his entire career however the majority of his about hundred contributions to this genre originate in the years 1899 to 1902 Initially Reger composed the chorale preludes exclusively as inserts for journals particularly in two very recent periodicals the Monatschrift für Gottesdienst und kirchliche Kunst was brought into being 1896 by the Strasbourgian theologians Friedrich Spitta und Julius Smend as well as the Blätter für Haus und Kirchenmusik that was published since 1897 by the press Beyer Söhne in Bad Langensalza all preludes published there has been collected as op 79b The Fifty two Easy Preludes on the most common protestant chorales op 67 that has been published 1903 by Lauterbach Kuhn were the first one that has been structured as collection and thus are stylistic diversely Short preludes of few bars are confronted with distinctive concert pieces With the Thirty Little Chorale Preludes op 135a that originate in summer and autumn 1914 and are the counterpart to the more weighty

    issued in succession in different forms of publication such as firstly in a periodical and later in an anthology compiled by Reger Where there are differences with the manuscript sources or even with earlier printed editions the different variants have been checked for plausibility and validity If the differences in the final version of the first edition were not conscious alterations on Reger s part but mistakes which have remained undiscovered or mistaken interpretations by the engraver a reading has been taken from the manuscripts or an early printed edition In problematic cases the variants have been described in a footnote Divergences in the RWA from the primary source Where the RWA diverges from the first edition this is recorded in the Lesartenverzeichnis of the Kritischer Bericht this is included in full on the DVD whereas the printed volume concentrates on passages which relate to the tonal shape of the work In the printed musical text the following alterations are indicated by diacritical markings or by a comment if they are not substantiated by another source addition of missing notes in square brackets addition of necessary accidentals in square brackets addition of missing dynamic indications or registration instructions in square brackets addition of missing articulation marks in square brackets addition of missing ties in square brackets addition of missing slurs broken lines addition of cautionary accidentals in small type Occasionally Reger used round or square brackets in the musical text for example for additional or alternative indications especially cautionary accidentals these have been standardized as round brackets Manual registration and coupling instructions have been standardized when they are simply reminders sempre III Man 8 4 they have been set in round brackets as a result the indication sempre is unnecessary in many cases Where the right and left hand play
