    CNT sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung BMBF hosted the Metrology and Exposure Assessment of Carbon Nanotubes workshop at Burg Castle in Solingen on November 29 30 2011 The workshop brought together a unique and renowned group of 25 international experts from 10 countries including the United States Japan Australia Switzerland and Korea Topics included the state of research in the detection and characterization of CNT the possible release of CNT during their manufacture processing and the use of CNT modified materials as well as the recycling of products containing CNT In addition to the currently relevant safety aspects in the use of CNT along the value chain future challenges were a particularly interesting topic of discussion and initial rules for future safety research involving products containing CNT were established The exploration of possible uses for CNT is far from exhaustive as Dr Péter Krüger director of Inno CNT at Bayer MaterialScience AG explained Carbon nanotubes offer immense potential for innovation Thus extensive and diverse safety research is essential for materials containing carbon nanotubes The results of the workshop are currently being evaluated Upon completion of this analysis the safety research guidelines will be published on the Inno CNT website www inno cnt de and made available to relevant organizations and regulatory authorities About Inno CNT Innovation Alliance Carbon Nanotubes This initiative is a research network consisting of more than 90 specialized small and mid sized enterprises large industrial conglomerates scientific institutes and numerous universities Its goal is to develop fundamental technologies and applications for carbon nanotubes CNT In 27 tightly linked projects the members of the initiative focus on practical applications of CNT in the fields of energy the environment mobility lightweight construction and electronics The alliance is part of

    CNT applications in 27 networked projects Researchers and users collaborate closely to develop competitive products CNT helmets the same protection with less weight Evidence of the specific benefits of the minuscule carbon nanotubes was produced not only in numerous specialist lectures but by the technological exhibits presented at the event Among other things these included a CNT reinforced motorcycle helmet made by Schuberth GmbH the market leader in motorcycle helmets which weighs 60 grams less than comparable products without compromising the driver s safety Schuberth wants to use the process not only for the high end motor sports market but also for the production of police helmets which weigh up to 2 5 kilograms The lighter CNT helmets significantly enhance safety during longer police operations However it will be a while before these innovative helmets will achieve competitive viability in the market Only when we can manufacture CNT helmets as quickly as conventional ones will mass production be feasible There s a lot to do in that regard but we think we can accomplish it in one and a half to two years said Dr Erhan Serbest head of development at Schuberth Greater height stability and durability Structures made of CNT high performance concrete In the construction industry CNT reinforced concrete will make it possible in the future to build considerably more sophisticated skyscrapers and bridges with less weight and greater elasticity thus conserving resources and energy while facilitating the implementation of taller structures as well Thanks to its minimal weight CNT reinforced high performance concrete is superior to the conventional steel reinforced concrete which limits the height of the structures to be built due to its high intrinsic weight To demonstrate the outstanding properties of CNT reinforced concrete Dyckerhoff AG the second largest concrete manufacturer in Germany presented a

    applications in securing jobs and prosperity in Germany is also an important topic of discussion at the conference Our research results provide important ideas for improving the future viability and sustainability of the German economy says Dr Péter Krüger of Bayer MaterialScience AG and project cluster manager at Inno CNT Carbon nanotubes facilitate the development of completely new materials This boosts the economy creates jobs and contributes to a consistent approach in meeting the challenges of climate protection as well as efficient resource and energy use The unique material properties of carbon nanotubes such as their high electrical and thermal conductivity and extreme strength and stability make them extremely versatile Many of the conventional materials used in the fields of energy the environment mobility lightweight construction and electronics can be optimized or replaced with carbon nanotubes For example fuel cells and batteries can be improved motor vehicles made lighter and wind parks more efficient The initial results obtained in the development of such applications will be presented at the annual Inno CNT conference in 2011 On the first day of the conference international guest lecturers will provide an overview of the work of similar research initiatives in foreign countries while the second day is devoted entirely to specific applications The displays include a CNT reinforced concrete bench only 3 centimeters thick as well as a CNT reinforced motorcycle helmet Another fascinating exhibit will be the CNT rotor blade segment of a wind power plant measuring 1 6 meters in length Thanks to the high conductivity of the CNT it contains its fatigue behavior can be continuously diagnosed via remote monitoring as well by measuring the electrical resistance In the morning renowned international CNT researchers will be giving their presentations In the afternoon parallel sessions will shed light on the issues

    2010 Inno CNT expanded to include the CarboLifeCycle project to explore in greater depth issues such as possible effects on health in the workplace and environmental compatibility in the production processing and use of products containing carbon nanotubes Experts have already been researching these topics for a number of years Back in March 2006 the TRACER project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research was launched to assess possible health risks arising from CNT throughout their entire life cycle Based on this the crossover project CarboSafe was launched within Inno CNT in 2008 CarboSafe closes the loop of the product cycle as the project also deals with the disposal of products containing CNT in the end of life phase In addition to studies on the immediate effects on water organisms the project focuses on the development of measurement strategies and technology in order to determine whether CNT can be released into the environment during the manufacture processing and use of products containing CNT CarboLifeCycle incorporates the results achieved by TRACER and CarboSafe in its work A new aspect under investigation is the degradation behavior wear of products containing CNT The project partners will continue to develop measuring

    to produce the helmet shell and less post processing is necessary With this innovation Schuberth also wants to satisfy customers increasing demands with regard to the safety and lower weight of motorcycle helmets over the long term However the company faces several challenges to get the product ready for the market The secret of the outstanding material properties of the CNT helmet lies in the microscopic carbon tubes The safety shell of the helmet was made as in conventional production processes with fibrous material soaked with resin and then tempered explains Dr Erhan Serbest head of product development at Schuberth GmbH However for the CNT helmet we added carbon nanotubes as an extra filler to the resin The diameter of the tiny tubes is only a few nanometers a billionth of the meter yet their material properties are amazing relative to their weight they have a significantly higher specific stability than steel or carbon fibers This also improves the characteristics of the composite fiber material of which the safety shell of the helmet is made Schuberth has already been working on the development of the CNT helmet for over a year Dr Serbest has an extremely high opinion of the collaboration within the research network As an SME we benefit greatly from being part of the Inno CNT research alliance particularly from the transfer of expertise and the exchange of ideas and information with the various partners The collaboration is very professional and communication is transparent According to Schuberth there are a number of issues to be resolved before the helmet can be approved for road traffic We still have a lot of research to do For instance the resin becomes more viscous with the addition of CNT so we need to adapt the processing methods accordingly says Dr Serbest
