    natural objects instruments and sculptures But how did such a remarkable wide ranging collection come into being The old Ratsbibliothek city council library and the library of the Discalced Friars Franciscans form the core of the Stadtbibliothek But from the sixteenth century onwards the library contained other things besides books Gradually its holdings came to include rare valuable and curious objects The year 1691 saw the appointment of its first full time librarian the jurist Johann Martin Waldschmidt 1650 1706 He was also well versed in theology history and natural science In his oath of office he had to swear to ensure that as well as books other rare objects and curiosities would be added to the library The Stadtbibliothek collection was diverse from the outset It included astronomical and scientific instruments archaeological finds and objects dug up in the area around Frankfurt minerals and fossils objects crafted in ivory gold and silver a portrait gallery of eminent scholars and a collection of coins Gazing down upon all this were portraits of Roman emperors whose lives and reigns were intended to serve as an example to the living Outstanding among the items in the collection were Johannes Schöner s terrestrial

    cultural political initiative that we have to thank for the founding of the Frankfurter Museum in 1808 The reforms Dalberg carried out as prince primate of the grand duchy of Frankfurt also targeted the advancement of the fine arts The Frankfurter Museum was founded in 1808 on the incentive of legation councillor Nikolaus Vogt and various artists of Frankfurt Dalberg donated to this new institution not only the paintings from the town s secularized churches monasteries and convents but also numerous works by contemporary artists of Frankfurt among them Christian Georg Schütz the Younger Anton Radl Johann Philipp Ulbricht and Ursula Magdalena Reinheimer which he had purchased or commissioned The newly founded museum also offered events such as concerts lectures and art presentations aiming at the comprehensive education of the citizens One of the outstanding objects in the Dalberg collection is the Altarpiece of St Anne which is on view in its entirety for the first time in more than two hundred years It is joined by other works likewise long not on view to the public for example the Last Judgement a painting of the 1630s attributed to Philipp Uffenbach Joseph Nikolaus Peroux s Death of King Günther of

    Frankfurt also undertook to stamp new coins To this end a new mint had to be built The construction was carried out under the supervision of Friedrich Ernst Roessler son of the Grand Ducal Hessian Mint Councillor Hector Roessler The stamping of new guilders and kreutzers got underway in 1840 Following the Vienna Coin Treaty of 1857 Vereinsthaler union thalers were also stamped in Frankfurt In addition to the municipal mint Roessler ran a privately managed parting plant A number of the Frankfurt mint s stamping tools are still extant along with coiner s dies patrices ferrules and weight sets When the German Reich was founded in 1871 a new currency was introduced the mark worth 100 pfennigs The job of the parting plant was to melt down old coins and produce bars and blanks for the stamping of the new coins Owing to this expansion of the business the operation later called the DEGUSSA became a joint stock company in 1873 All Frankfurt coins as well as the gold and silver coins of the German Reich consisted of material melted down at the DEGUSSA The crude metal was initially cast in bars from which the blanks the unstamped coin
