    invented in 1839 proved to be an outstanding means of pictorially recording the urban topography which since the mid nineteenth century had been undergoing an ever more rapid process of change Frankfurt cathedral 1867 In addition to views of the cityscape and its architecture by Carl Abt Carl Böttcher Theodor Creifelds Carl Friedrich Fay Karl Hertel Johann Schäfer and others the large collection of photographs by Carl Friedrich Mylius is among the outstanding nineteenth century treasures The portrait collection for its part contains the historically significant daguerreotypes by photographer Jacob Seib of members of the first German parliament Paulskirchenparlament 1848 and coloured calotype portrayals of Frankfurt citizens from the studies of Fritz and Julie Vogel as well as Steinberger Bauer In the twentieth century the collection expanded beyond townscapes urban history and portraits to include the areas of artistic and journalistic photography as well as a special collection on World War I The list of photographers with works in our inventory has meanwhile grown to comprise more than six hundred names The first half of the twentieth century is represented by Carl Abt and the studio Paul Wolff Tritschler known particularly for their documentation of Frankfurt s old town along with Hermann Collischonn Grete Leistikow Martha Hoepffner and Ilse Bing who depicted the modernity of New Frankfurt and many others Self Portrait of Ilse Bing Within the framework of various exhibition and collection projects carried out after the museum s reopening in 1972 extensive photographer s estates entered the collection they are currently made accessible through research and cataloguing They include among others works by Friedrich Lauffer and Max Göllner the stereo negatives of Wilhelm Straub as well as the special collection of fashion photographs from the National Socialist period collected by the Archiv Frankfurter Modeamt archive of the Frankfurt

    to master confectioner Johann Valentin Prehn 1749 1821 and merchant Johann Georg Christian Daems 1774 1856 to the city of Frankfurt 1839 and 1845 respectively The prince primate had acquired the paintings from secularized Frankfurt churches and abbeys among them works by Albrecht Dürer Mathias Grünewald Hans Baldung Grien Hans Holbein the Elder and the Master of Frankfurt Yet Dalberg also purchased compositions by contemporary artists of Frankfurt Prehn s painting cabinet a unique example of a privately owned art collection unites more than eight hundred miniature paintings in thirty two hinged crates among them the famous Little Garden of Paradise executed by an Upper Rhenish master in ca 1410 20 on permanent loan to the Städel and more than thirty large scale paintings primarily by German and Dutch masters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries The Daem holdings for their part comprise more than two hundred paintings likewise executed primarily by German particularly Frankfurt and Dutch artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with a focus on landscapes Still life by Georg Flegel ca 1635 Frankfurt painting of the seventeenth century is represented in the hmf collection by compositions of Adam Elsheimer and Georg Flegel for example and that of the eighteenth century by members of the Schütz family Numerous works of the Kronberg school of painting exemplify the local painting activities in the nineteenth century Of substantial significance for the self conception of the city of Frankfurt and its patriciate are the paintings on the theme of justice from the town hall as well as those of the Kaisersaal imperial hall in the Römer likewise in the care of the historisches museum Among the smaller historically interesting holdings are for example Frankfurt shooting targets of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries The inventory of stained glass windows lists

    of prints and drawings the Graphic Arts Collection at the historisches museum is not classified by artist but according to themes and print media the main series encompass topographical views city maps and architectural plans of Frankfurt and the region historical events with special sections on the imperial coronations the Frankfurt fair the revolution of 1848 and World War I and portraits The corresponding works from the Photography Collection are also kept here The vedute and architectural views by Carl Theodor Reiffenstein 1820 1893 numbering some two thousand sheets make up a category of their own Smaller series provide insight into theatre and music in Frankfurt the city s military life sports activities health system police and fire department and regional culture Further thematic focuses are printed material issued by the municipal administration material having to do with elections and business advertising media depictions of traditional costumes and modern fashion devotional pictures calling cards and bookplates miniatures and initials printers marks and commercial art Production drawings from Frankfurt s craft guilds are likewise included in the collection Also worthy of mention are the artistic prints several architectural bequests e g that of Salins de Montfort and drawings from the bequest of the Dombauverein cathedral construction association These holdings are enhanced significantly by series of various print media for example calendars from 1693 onward posters from 1880 onward postcards playing cards from the 16th c onward illustrated broadsheets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries coloured paper and wallpaper The Graphic Arts Collection also has official documents among its holdings passports deeds insignia family trees and various types of diplomas as well as birth marriage and death certificates The collection of old books encompasses rare and valuable publications of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries used primarily for exhibition purposes They include the
