    Tblissi in the frames of the international project DifferAnce in the Contemporary art 2001 Florence International Biennial in Contemporary Art Italy LEVAN TCHOGOSCHVILI Levan Tchogoschvili was born in 1953 in Tbilisi into a family of famous Georgian scholars The family atmosphere greatly influenced his determination of the world His first picture drew on oriental Greek and Germanic myths and legends the heroic images of his childhood imagination His first teacher was his uncle Otar Andronikashvili a pupil of the abstractionist D Kakabadze In 1976 Levan Tchogoschvili graduated from the Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts There he was a pupil of Guram Kutateladze a distinguished follower of Cezanne who contributed much to the development of modern Georgian art In the middle of the 1970 s A Ovchinnikov an outstanding Russian restorer of icons and frescoes arrived in Tbilisi He directed Tchogoschvili s work on the 9th and10th century Georgian frescoes in the David Garedja monastery complex Tchogoschvili considers him his teacher and the person who most strengthened his interest in traditional orthodox painting The series of portraits of the kings of Georgia was made at the beginning of the 1989 s for the monastery of Gremi As Tchogoschvili explains he paints exclusively from photographs of his ancestors the Georgian nobility destroyed in 1929 30 or representatives of the oldest dynasty of kings in Europe Bagrationi nothing that all beauty is doomed to death art is a tear shed over it Tchogoschvili as mentioned above chooses old family photographs with their deliberately impressive exposure of representation The treatment is conceptual and the artistic style chosen by him as far back as the second half of the 70 s is innovative for east European art of the time To produce his images he combines various layers of artistic heritage using samples of different
