beautiful oriental and Old Testament themes will be revealed to more opera viewers Dr Michaela Mojligovä Institute of Theatre and Film Research Slovak Academy of Science about The recent fully staged premiere production of the English version of Oasis in Bratislava The children s enthusiasm mentioned in Mojligovä s review is also reflected in the moving letter which the composer received from Michaela Valentova whose daughter took part in this production Dear Mrs Fleischer I am very grateful for your masterpiece Oasis I was also very happy to see and hear my daughter sing in the opera in the choir I never thought that this could happen But it happened Your music touched my heart and also taught my daughter about love and understanding between peoples and cultures 19 May is written by gold letters in our family Thank you for coming to Slovakia and for your support of our children I wish you best of luck and love in your life You are blessed by God Thankfully Michaela Valentova from Bratislava Also the IAWM Journal International Federation of Women in Music published a rave review of the CD which contains the world premiere of Oasis in its original German version see also here The reviewer Meira Warshauer wrote that this opera takes Fleischer further into her boundary crossing journey The opera is an allegory for peaceful cooperation with the backdrop of contemporary Arab Israeli relations hovering close by Fleischer s writing is most effective in the half sung half spoken Mantra of Wandering sections The overlay of solo flute arabesques tube whistling percussion and instrumental punctuation all of which accompany the chorus creates a sense of wandering in vast desert spaces Here one feels the effect of Fleischer s immersion in the Sinai desert while composing the opera as described in her notes JA WM Journal vol 19 No 1 Pune 20131 p 37 This children s opera is an amazing piece of art Its catchy melodies were sung beautifully by the children who clearly enjoyed important female composer was simply crying out to be orchestrated On the other hand her extensive musical cycle also contains genuinely pianistic passages that would have lost much of their musical substance had they been transferred to other instruments Whereas a composer like Ravel in his orchestration of Mussorgsky s Pictures at an Exhibition occasionally added notes of his own Torp has remained strictly faithful to the original in this respect using as his basis Fanny Hensel s own annotated manuscript first published in autumn 2000 In parts 1 2 and 12 the composer incorporated references to A Midsummer Night s Dream composed by her brother Felix and in the final Choral No 13 it is possible to discern the beginning of Bach s St Mathew Passion Martin Torp has underlined these accordion Joseph Macerollo and solo percussion Ryan Scott This ambitious work had a persistently high centre of gravity no surprise perhaps given the title It sifted its opening tutti chords till only the highest notes remained testing them as a position of repose and also of sustained tension It was as if Lee were measuring the melodic value of the bright upper tones we hear but don t perceive in every instrumental note while giving this analytic process an emotional urgency Lee s distinctive scoring was beautifully transparent even when thick with independent parts This clarity with the silvery upper tones that dominated the piece gave the music a magical glow from start to finish The final sound was a gleaming accord with percussion that took a long time to fade away completely I would have been game to hear the piece again immediately especially with the fine attention paid by conductor Robert Aitken and the 15 members of his ensemble Robert Everett Green The Globe and Mail 2011 Hope Lee s spiritually inspired highly gestural style is featured in Secret of the Seven Stars Here the accordion s extended resources are on display pitch bending bellows shaking and other titillating accordion exotica The work trace the emergence of entire soundworlds from a single sustained pitch a process the composer repeats in a consistently fascinating variety of ways Lee s approach to the contemporary quasi concerto format in Seven Stars is more to combine solo and ensemble voices than to counterpose them making her acoustic music sound just as interactive as Eagle s
