    for Harmony and a second prize for Accompaniment her parents made her leave the Conservatory in order to put an end to her romance with the celebrated Amédée Hettich a brilliant young student of song Mélanie then entered into a marriage of convenience becoming the wife of rich Parisian industrialist Albert Domange She became responsible for a large family and was burdened with many household chores In this situation always far removed from music she soon rediscovered her passion for composition a passion enhanced by her hypersensitivity inspired by her forbidden love and elevated by a deeply Christian attitude to morals and mysticism Mel Bonis has left us an important body of works about 300 pieces covering virtually every genre choral works organ pieces melodies chamber music including a number of masterpieces such as the quartets and the sonnets orchestra and piano pieces The post Romantic style of her works is fully in keeping with her era She displays great variety ranging from the dramatic to the humorous is often vigorous and sensual borrows from the Orient always writes well and with great sensitivity These are intimate pieces easily identi fied by their harmonic and rhythmic originality The music of Mel Bonis is both original yet well integrated into its time Deeply moving it springs from an undying source of inspiration is well structured and confidently written The chamber music represents the flower of her works It is made up of some twenty works for a variety of instruments almost always associated with the piano A dozen of these are major works sonatas trios quartets septets which will bear comparison with the best composers of the time Werke Annäherung XII an sieben Komponistinnen XII Piano Quartet in B flat Piano quartet d major op 124 Mel Bonis Leben und Werk

    singers joined by instrumentalists who were friends of hers high level performances of oratorios opera arias and chamber music by Bach Mozart Beethoven Weber and Mendelssohn Here she was also able to make her own works known These concerts became increasingly well attended over the years with Fanny presenting her works for piano solo her lieder duets choral songs the scene Hero and Leander for Soprano and Piano or Orchestra the Piano Trio which appeared posthumously as op 2 as well as the orchestral Ouverture of 1830 for the première of which the Orchestra of the Königstädter Theater was engaged In addition to the friends and acquaintances who came to the Sonntagsmusiken quite a number of famous people attended the Humboldt brothers Franz Liszt Clara Wieck Schumann Johanna Kinkel Heinrich Heine etc These concerts with which according to Rellstab Fanny Hensel to whom we are much indebted enriched the artistic life in our town made up for some of the restrictions she was forced to live with Conducting such concerts had a positive effect on her work as a composer In 1831 she composed larger works for soloists choir and orchestra such as the cantatas Hiob and Lobgesang and an Oratorio In 1839 40 the Hensel family was finally able to fulfil a long standing wish they spent a year travelling in Italy This year was among the happiest in Fanny s life In Italy she finally received recognition for her work beyond the family circle and became acquainted with various musicians who thought highly of her work and were supportive of her creativity The young Charles Gounod for example wrote the following in his memories Mrs Hensel was an extremely learned musician and played the piano very well Despite her small slight figure she was a woman of excellent intellect and full of energy that could be read in her deep fiery eyes Along with all this she was an extremely talented pianist After returning to Berlin Fanny composed her most important piano work the biographical cycle Das Jahr 1841 During the epoch in which she lived Fanny was the only composer to use the idea of depicting each of the twelve months of the year musically She was not to carry through further publications of her works Fanny Hensel died of a stroke suffered during a rehearsal for one of her Sonntagsmusiken on May 14th 1847 Following the death of his sister Felix Mendelssohn fell into a deep depression he died suddenly on November 4th of the same year Upon the request of his brother in law Wilhelm Hensel he had arranged for several of Fanny s further works to be published They appeared in 1850 In 1987 the Furore Verlag began publishing those of her works which had remained unprinted Today Fanny Hensel born Mendelssohn is considered to be one of the most important composers of the romantic era Werke 2 Heine Duets a cappella 3 Goethe Duets 3 Heine Duets Achmed an Irza Eight Lieder for

    wind quintet Entgleist for wind quintet a hymn to the punctuality of trains was received with enthusiasmin a performance by Ensemble Zephyr at the Darmstadt Theatre Her string quartet Sollen Nachtigallen schweigen was first performed by the Hölderlin Quartet in 2011 in Schloss Morsbroich Leverkusen Her first major opera Der Felsenjunge The Rock Boy based on a story by Jan Michael was commissioned by the city of Leverkusen Germany and enjoyed successful performances there in 2005 A further 18 performances followed in a new production at the Bonn Opera in December 2008 The opera oratorio Star over Amsterdam 2007 first performed in Ams terdam in 2007 retells the nativity story in modern times and is also based on a book by Jan Michael This substantial piece is written for six soloists mixed choir and twelve instrumentalists Camille van Lunen is the winner of the International Competition for Women Composers of the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg and the Mariann Steegmann Foundation 2013 In the opera Der Mantel 2010 based on a short story by Gogol the composer explores the combination of a symphony orchestra with pre recorded electronic sounds The story of her opera Trawler 2012 after the book by Redmond O Hanlon is a vivid account of daily life on board a deep sea trawler Scored for six soloists and eleven instrumentalists it shows Camille van Lunen at her best lashings of energy colour and powerful poetry put into service of the drama a drama developing both on the sea and in the souls of the men an board The composer does not hesitate to combine unusual techniques for example using the stage set itself as an instrument with traditional elements several Scottish folk songs sung with great verve by the fishermen are woven into this contemporary composition More information

    return to Yugoslavia she taught music theory at the Music Academy of Belgrade In the years after the Second World War Ljubica Maric devoted herself to researching Serbian folk music and ancient orthodox church music this enabled her mature compositional style to reach complete expression in the 50 s and 60 s The most important characteristic of her work is the specific synthesis of the heritage of folk music ancient medieval Byzantine musical thought and a modern sensibility to sound I have learned everything from folk music Ljubica Maric declared One of the profound spurces of inspiration contributing to the composer s specific style is the Octoëchos a volume of medieval Serbian religious songs based on Byzantine church music and arranged in eight voices modes according to their scale structure She is the very first composer in the history of music who used church melodies from the Byzantine music for creating non liturgical compositions In the 80 s and 90 s Ljubica Marc devoted herself mainly to chamber music creating exceptional works like Song for the Flute Invocation Monodia Octoicha From the Darkness Chanting Asymptote Archaia Torso which while plunging in an ever new but recognizable and individual manner into the ancient depths of the past creatively speaking witness authentically to their own time Besides her compositions the versatile talent of Ljubica Maric is also expressed in her drawings graphic art and literature including Tablice tables a volume of poetic philosophic aphorisms Her works are published by the publishing house Furore Verlag Ljubica Maric died on September 17 2003 in Belgrade Werke Annäherung IX an sieben Komponistinnen Archaia Archaia II Asymptote Asymptote From the Darkness Chanting Cantata Invocation Klaviermusik I Klaviermusik II Monodia Octoicha Music for Orchestra Music for Orchestra Octoicha I Octoicha I for symphony orchestra Ostinato super Thema
