    spiritual welfare represents one of the many significant artifacts that has remained from that time A donation of 100 m3 Swedish birch wood by the American Brethren Church had enabled its production The renovation and restructuring of the buildings for the new peaceful use began with great difficulties Structurally the houses were in bad condition The roofs were leaking the floors were rotten and there was hardly any furniture or heating However despite all these difficulties the Christian responsibility for the many people in urgent need of help was stronger The first Christmas in Friedehorst was celebrated by approximately 50 people These were either homeless or injured soldiers who had lived in an auxiliary bunker before or bombed out residents of an old people s home of the Marthasheim and the Dorotheenheim which had been taken over by Friedehorst Many of them supported the build up phase with manual and domestic works Training workshops were established to enable ex servicemen to learn a new civil profession One part of the institution was placed at the disposal of the Protestant deaconesses home which used it at first as a ward for tuberculosis patients and later as an orthopaedic clinic of renown Due to the growing number of tasks it became necessary to create an individual office for the management of Friedehorst The first managing director Pastor Heinrich Johannes Diehl was appointed on 1 August 1948 and stayed in office until 1980 According to an agreement made in September 1947 the right of use for the area and the buildings originally was limited to a period of 5 years A further limited lease contract allowed the continuation of the previous work Based on this contract the facilities which had been founded on the basis of need during the post war years could

    treatment possibilities and to create a ward for early rehabilitation Also in 1985 Pastor Johann Jakob Münden took over the office of the director From 1992 Mr Karl Heinz Dekreon supported him as administration manager Up to his retirement in 1996 Pastor Münden s tenure of office was mainly characterized by a restructuring of the directing responsibilities Important managing tasks were decentralized and transferred to the managers of the respective department which resulted in additional potential for development These changes also included the supplementation of the job facilities offered by the vocational advancement center with commercial training with the adjustment of the training scope for industrial technical jobs to the current requirements of the labor market with the integration of the elderly people s nursing school as well as with the development of integration and advancement measures for people with mental impairments and other specific difficulties on the labor market In the department for disabled people the traditional structures of nursing homes were completely modified to enable the people to develop individuality and permit social integration Today the residents live in manageable internal communities and external household communities in different municipal districts of Bremen The therapeutic workshops changed into a day care center which beside the manual works offers extensive therapeutic and social educational advancement programs The residents meet in a leisure club and arrange for spare time activities together with social education workers The facilities for elderly people have been developed into different forms of housing too One home was modified into a modern apartment building where elderly people can live on their own but with the availability of social services A ward for short term nursing has also been offered since then A home care service also offers expert help for people in need of care and attention

    house was financed by donations by private persons and charity foundations Mr Karl Heinz Dekreon retired after 13 years as finance manager in September 2005 In the next month Mr Lothar Lotzkat MA in business studies assumed his office The restructuring of Friedehorst was continued in spring 2007 when three Friedehorst departments were converted into new subsidiaries Dienste für Senioren und Pflege Friedehorst gGmbH elderly care Dienste für Menschen mit Behinderung Friedehorst gGmbH care for people with disabilities and Neurologisches Rehabilitationszentrum für Kinder und Jugendliche Friedehorst gGmbH Neurological Center for Children and Adolescents In August 2007 the Nebelthau Gymnasium a private school for children from grade 5 12 was opened The school with its protestant diaconal and bilingual German English profile places a new emphasis on education by Friedehorst Foundation In October 2008 the foundation for a new clinic of the Dienste für Senioren und Pflege was laid The clinic will be opened in 2010 and will accommodate wards for elderly care special care and ViaVita the ward for patients suffering from coma vigil In the early months of 2009 another foundation was laid for a new house of the Dienste für Menschen mit Behinderung Grown up people with disabilities from the children s houses and a part of the workshops will move there The Dienste für Senioren und Pflege were complemented by a day care A decisive personal change took place in July 2009 Managing director Dr Georg Hinrich Hammer retired after 13 years in Friedehorst His successor Pastor Hans Peter Reeb left the compnay in March 2012 Since April 2013 Pastor Michael Schmidt represents the managing board together with Mr Bert Juhnke The story of Friedehorst is the story of conversion which has now already lasted for nearly 60 years A military area was converted into a place
