    vitae Photocopies of documents evidencing applicant s musical studies and conducting experience certificates letters of recommendation concert programmes etc DVD with recordings of representative conducting sessions of concerts or operas including rehearsals if available Three different photos taken recently with at least one fine portrait may also be sent by email Photocopy of birth certificate or passport with translation if necessary There is no admission fee for applying If the documents will be sent from abroad please mark value 0 zero on the customs declaration All applicants will be informed once a complete set of documents has been received by the competition office Please note that application documents and materials will not be returned to the applicants Admission and Organisation On the basis of the applications submitted the jury will select up to 24 candidates to participate in the Competition Each applicant will be informed on or before December 15 2014 whether or not he or she is invited to participate Each applicant so invited must confirm their participation by December 31 2014 All participants will receive all necessary information concerning their stay in Frankfurt and the details of the Competition s organisation Accommodation is free during the Competition travelling costs must be borne by the participants The order in which candidates are asked to conduct during the first round and the semi final will be decided by lot The jury s deliberations and assessment of candidates are confidential The jury has the right to interrupt rehearsals to ask questions or to terminate a conducting session at any time The jury s decision will be announced immediately after completion of each round All decisions of the jury are final and not subject to appeal The organisers reserve the right in their free discretion to modify any part of the Competition

    final concert the three finalists conducted the Frankfurter Museumsorchester orchestra of the Frankfurt Opera performing the following pieces of music James Gaffigan Till Eulenspiegel by Richard Strauss Ivo Venkov La Mer by Claude Debussy and Johannes Gustavsson Dance Suite by Béla Bartók Whereas for the First International Conductors Competition Sir Georg Solti in 2002 there was no first prize winner the jury this year decided to award two first prizes In announcing the decision the chairman of the jury Christoph von Dohnányi said the jury finds it difficult to look accurately into the future Rather it checks whether the candidates have achieved what they set out to do And here the two first prize winners are equal All three according to von Dohnányi will have a good career and a lot of pleasure in music Both 1st prize winners were awarded with 15 000 in prize money and permitted to conduct a double concert with the Frankfurter Museumsorchester once again in the Alte Oper Frankfurt at a later date The 2nd prize winner received 10 000 The prize money has been donated by the Cultural Foundation of Deutsche Bank James Gaffigan 25 received his conductor s training at the American Academy of Conducting the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Tanglewood Music Center Here he was able to work together with conductors such as Kurt Masur and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos before he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in conducting from the New England Conservatory and Rice University in Houston His debut with the Cleveland Orchestra was at the Blossom Music Festival and a short time later he was appointed its Assistant Conductor Concurrently he became the Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Gaffigan has already worked in assisting roles with the Boston Symphony Orchestra the
